Wilhelmshaven, founded as an imperial naval port, is a relatively young city. Its street system, largely laid out in a grid pattern, is an indication of its "drawing board" planning. Buildings from this era are mostly characterized by their clinker brick architectural style. There are even buildings in the style of Brick Expressionism, such as the town hall. However, buildings from long before the Prussian founding are also still sporadically present in the cityscape. All in all, Wilhelmshaven has a high recognition value from the perspective of its cityscape, as it is noticeably difficult to find a landmark without a maritime connection.
